A Letter from Dr. Glass

Dear Colleagues,

I have recently become involved in the radio issue concerning your schools and wish to thank you for your patience as we continue to work through the new radio rollout. I know we are all committed to keeping our schools safe and the purpose of this communication is to provide clear information and support for you going forward.

Here are the important facts and process steps you should know:

  • Your current radios will continue to operate after October first; however, they are nearing the end of their useful lives and replacement parts and batteries are not available. Therefore, we strongly recommend replacement.
  • Jeffco Public Schools Safety & Security Department has set aside 6 of the old radios for emergency replacement in the event your current old radio fails. These can be used as a stop-gap measure.
  • The purchasing team have created a streamlined process for ordering new radios. We will be contacting your school over the next couple of days to provide you with options and develop a plan for your school.
  • Charters are responsible for the cost of the new radios, but we have worked with the district vendor to secure the same bulk discount cost that the district paid ($1,896.68 each).
  • If your school is not in a financial position to purchase the radio, then the district will provide an interest-free loan to allow you to get the radio now, which will be repaid in the next budget year.
  • During this transition, or if you decide to keep using your old radios, you should test them on a regular basis. You can do this through radio check with dispatch, or leaving the radio on so you can hear radio traffic (meaning that it is functioning).

I appreciate your patience as we work to resolve this issue and hope this is the last communication you get on it! In the meantime, please know that your existing radios will continue to operate and that we are here to support you in transitioning. Should you have any further questions, please coordinate those through Tom McMillan, your Community Superintendent.

Kind regards,

Jason E. Glass, Ed.D.
